CARTAGENA TO BARRANQUILLA

Cartagena Colombia
Cartagena, Ciudad Amurallada

Join us on a voyage of discovery from the shores of the Caribbean upriver into the world of the Magdalena Basin. A journey into the heart of Colombia. We begin in the gorgeous Caribbean port city of Cartagena, before making our way up the man-made canal to delve into the Afro-Colombian culture, before arriving at the river proper, at the bustling fish market town of Calamar. From there, we sail upriver through La Mojana, before arriving at the birthplace of “La Cumbia” Colombia’s musical gift to the world, at El Banco.

Returning downriver, we come to the jewel of the Magdalena, the town of Mompox, a World Heritage Site that seems forgotten in time. From our base, we can explore further, visiting the flooded wetlands and learning about the local people’s “amphibian lifestyle”. We continue downriver, visiting the unique village of Nueva Venecia, where the inhabitants live entirely on houses built upon stilts. Places: Cartagena

Activities: Walking tour and welcome dinner

Highlights:

Arrive in the colorful, tropical bay and city of Cartagena de Indias, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the gems of South America. In the afternoon, we enjoy a walking tour with expert guides to explore the historic sites of the walled city, busy streets, local food, the music and the architectural riches of this captivating, historic neighborhood. Our welcome dinner is served on-board.

Place: Palenque, Calamar

Activities: Wildlife exploration/biking, host communities, musical performances, historic architecture.

Highlights:

We start our day early with the option of biking across the countryside, or exploring the local wildlife of the Canal del Dique aboard our launches. We then make our way by land to meet the host communities of the small town of Palenque, the heart of the Afro-Caribbean people and culture of this area, and the first settlement of free men and women in all of the Americas. Their heritage was awarded with World Heritage status and we immerse ourselves in its people, traditions, gastronomy, language and rhythms during our visit.

Back on-board, we sail onwards to join the Magdalena River proper, a river that flows the length of Colombia, arriving in the market town of Calamar for an evening encounter with the town’s musical heritage, full of drums and singing, history and culture.

Place: Calamar, Tenerife, Tapegua

Activities: Fish market discovery, walking and music in Tenerife, wetland exploration

Highlights:

Embrace the busy chaos of the Calamar fish market early in the morning, as families from around the area arrive by canoe to sell their freshwater fish in the bustling market. Upriver, we disembark at the small town of Tenerife, once an important trading post on the river, used as a base by Simón Bolívar during the Wars of Independence. Here, we are not far from Valledupar, birthplace of one of Colombia’s most famous musical styles: vallenato (awarded UNESCO World Heritage status).

We visit the local church, meet local people and enjoy various options for exploring this fascinating area: by foot, “moto-taxi”, launch and kayak, depending on guests’ preferences, discovering the wildlife and beautiful wetlands of Tapegua and El Morro.

Place: Wetlands in La Mojana; El Banco.

Activities: River cruising; music and dance performances

Highlights:

Our day is spent winding our way upriver along the western Loba Branch of the Magdalena, known as La Mojana. We set out to explore a fascinating ciénaga (swamp) full of birdlife aboard our launches or kayaks in the morning, and in the afternoon, motor upriver further, passing the “meeting of the waters” (where the Cauca River joins the Magdalena) and enjoying activities on-board.

At the end of the day, we arrive at the town of El Banco, famous as the birthplace of La Cumbia, Colombia’s most feted musical style. We enjoy a colorful musical and dance performance, and discover more about cumbia’s origins, instruments and different styles.

Place: El Banco, ciénagas and savannahs; Mompox

Activities: Wetland exploration; savannahs by bike; walking exploration; music and dance performances

Highlights:

Early in the morning, we head out to explore the beautiful nearby ecosystems and natural riches of creeks and ciénagas (Zapatosa, among the largest in Colombia) by launch, or a bit later, take to our bikes to ride across open savannahs pockmarked by impressively-large termite nests. We continue our journey, now downriver along the Mompox Branch, arriving at Mompox after our lunch on-board.

The town ranks as one of the highlights on our journey, awarded World Heritage Site status in 1995. It “slept for one hundred years of solitude”, its Colonial past amazingly and stunningly intact. In the late afternoon, we disembark to enjoy a guided exploration of this fascinating sleepy, small town on the banks of the river, followed by a jazz concert and time to mingle with the locals.

Place: Mompox, wetland ecosystems

Activities: Walking exploration, crafts; Wetland and host community exploration; kayaking.

Highlights:

The morning is free for everyone to discover Mompox’s riches, traditions, silver filigree jewelry and livelihoods at their own pace, strolling its riverbank promenade lined with colorfully-painted houses and mansions, and meeting the locals.

The beautiful creeks and ciénaga of Pijiño await us for an afternoon exploration aboard our launches and paddling our kayaks, to observe dozens of species of birds and learn the ways of the local fishermen. In the evening, there’s more time enjoy Mompox’s local charm before we set off downriver at night.

Place: River from Mompox to Sitio Nuevo; Nueva Venecia

Activities: Activities on-board; wildlife exploration; host communities; Carnaval parade

Highlights:

Having sailed all night downriver, we’ll spend the morning passing various communities before arriving at Sitio Nuevo. After lunch, we begin a fascinating journey (which can include kayaking) to discover a remarkable settlement. Nueva Venecia (New Venice) is aptly named: it is entirely built on stilts in the middle of the biggest ciénagas in the region, Santa Marta. Here, local guides show us around their unique town, explain how life is lived entirely on water, and share their handicrafts.

Back on-board, we make our way to the port city of Barranquilla. We’re greeted by a Carnaval parade, emblematic of the city’s celebration every February, which ranks second only to Rio de Janeiro’s in size and exuberance. We celebrate our last night together with a special dinner on-board.

Place: Barranquilla

Activities: Cultural and historical exploration; check-out

Highlights:

Barranquilla, an important commercial port on the Caribbean, has made great strides to regenerate its riverside, where we dock. We set out in the morning to explore the city’s history, music, the past and the future.

Check out. (B, L).
