SOUTHEASTERN GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

SANTA CRUZ ISLAND

Visited on days one and six.

While it is home to one of the largest human populations in the Galapagos, the first part of this tour will see you on the far side of the island enjoying beautiful and isolated Las Bachas Beach and its wildlife. The final day of this itinerary, on the other hand, will give you the chance to savor a bit of the laidback island life as well as its lush highlands, which are home to giant tortoises!

SAN CRISTOBAL ISLAND

Visited on day two.

Revel in the stunning vistas available at remote Punta Pitt, located on the island’s far side. Wholly unique in the sense that it is one of the few, if not the only visitor site in the Galapagos, where you can sometimes admire all three species of boobies in one go. Numerous aquatic activities are available here. Later in the day, you’ll also get to briefly enjoy the laidback island life in the town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno before visiting a giant-tortoise breeding center.

ESPAÑOLA ISLAND

Visited on day three.

Explore the fascinating variety of bird colonies present on this island. The relatively large waved-albatross (present between April-December) is one of the biggest attractions here, along with a number of other beautiful winged creatures. Geological phenomena and epic coastlines await to take your breath away, all of them topped off with a visit to one of the most beautiful beaches in the archipelago, where several exciting aquatic activities are offered

FLOREANA ISLAND

Visite on day four.

Immerse yourself in the human history of the Galapagos by partaking in the rather unique act of sending mail through a barrel that’s been functioning as a post office for over two centuries! You’ll also enjoy gorgeous beaches that are frequented by flamingos, herons, and numerous other birds. Snorkeling, glass-bottom boat, kayaking, and paddleboarding are offered here.

ISABELA ISLAND

Visited on day five.

Admire the epic and beautiful coastline of one of the largest islands in the Galapagos. In addition to the dramatic geology found here, you’ll also enjoy a journey through a mangrove patch followed by a journey across a landscape that’s dominated by volcanoes. After that, you’ll get the chance to hop aboard our glass-bottom boat or go snorkeling in the presence of green sea turtles, playful sea lions, ocean sunfish, and even penguins, possibly!

FERNANDINA ISLAND

Visited on day five.

Venture out and dazzle your eyes with one of the archipelago’s youngest islands and its beautiful set of tiny bays, mangroves, and coves. You’ll also have the chance to go snorkeling or hop aboard our glass-bottom boat in search of flightless cormorants and penguins, among other creatures!

EDEN ISLET

Visited on day six.

Situated off the coast of Santa Cruz, this island provides Guests with the opportunity to get close to a number of creatures that live along the coast and in the water. These include blue-footed boobies, reef sharks, and frigatebirds. Several aquatic activities are provided here.

NORTH SEYMOUR ISLAND

Visited on day six.

Rounding out this Galapagos itinerary is captivating North Seymour, with its fair share of frigatebirds, blue-footed boobies, and swallow-tailed gulls. As we make our way through the sprawling Palo Santo tree forest, we’ll make it to the other side of the island where sea lions, marine iguanas, and beautiful sunsets are quite common.

This small, secret rooftop of the restored Casa Gangotena mansion peers over Plaza San Francisco in the center of Quito’s colonial Old Town, the world’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. Order a Cedrón Spritz, a refreshing mix of rum, lemon, sparkling wine, and fresh lemon verbena (cedrón) syrup and leaf, then revel in the mesmerizing, real-time montage of daily life in Ecuador’s capital as it parades past.

A Font of information, Klaus has spent decades in the field, leading tours in the Amazon, Andes and Galapagos Islands. He hung up his guiding boots a few years back and now creates itineraries for the tour operator, Metropolitan Touring. Adrift in the Pacific Ocean, hundreds of miles from mainland South America, Galapagos is one of the most biodiverse locales on Earth.

Santa Cruz II is a replacement for the much-loved Santa Cruz, which plied the waters of the Galapagos for 36 years. It is not a new ship; it was built in 2002 and sailed as Mare Australis under the Australis cruise brand, operating expedition cruises around Cape Horn and to Antarctica. Metropolitan Touring bought the ship in 2015 and completely refurbished it, launching it as Santa Cruz II in October 2015.

When this modern, minimalist, glass-walled jungle lodge opened in 2012, it changed the accommodation game in South America. Arquitect Alfredo Ribadeneira’s “protective cocoon” would impress in a modern city; in the depths of an Andean cloudforest, it is wild, audacious and beautiful. Though only 70 miles from Quito, Maspi Lodge sits in splendid isolation, perched on a cliff at the end of an unsealed road.
