Join us on a voyage of discovery from the shores of the Caribbean to the world upriver of the Magdalena River. A journey into the heart of Colombia.
We begin ?at the end?, where the mighty Magdalena disgorges into the Caribbean Sea at the busy port city of Barranquilla, which hosts a famous Carnival every February. We sail upriver to explore the unique settlement of Nueva Venecia, where the inhabitants live entirely on houses built upon stilts, amidst a huge ciénaga (swamp), before arriving at the bustling fish market town of Calamar. We sail upriver through La Mojana, before arriving at the birthplace of ?La Cumbia? Colombia?s musical gift to the world, at El Banco.
Returning downriver, we come to the jewel of the Magdalena, the town of Mompox, a World Heritage Site that seems forgotten in time. From our base, we can explore further, visiting the flooded wetlands and learning about the local people?s ?amphibian lifestyle?. We continue downriver, via the fascinating town of Palenque ? heart of the region?s Afro-Caribbean world???before arriving at the gorgeous historic city of Cartagena, back on the Caribbean.
