Day by Day

The fascinating beauty of South America is on full display as you visit some of the most exciting places on the continent. The adventure begins with a visit to Quito, Ecuador followed by a 5-day tour of the Northern Galapagos Islands aboard the stylish and comfortable Yacht Isabela II. Next up is a trip through neighboring Peru, where you’ll cap off your journey by touring the mystical ruins of Machu Picchu!

Day 1: Arrive in Quito

Arrive in Quito, Ecuador, where one of our team members will welcome you at the airport, help you with your luggage, and take you over to Casa Gangotena Boutique Hotel, in the beautiful Historic Center of Quito.

Day 2: Old Town Quito + Middle of the World

The Historic Center of Quito is the first UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also the most well-preserved colonial quarter in all of South America. You’ll awake in the heart of it all! Following breakfast at Casa Gangotena, get ready for a day of sightseeing through Independence Plaza, San Francisco Church and Convent, and La Compañía de Jesús Church. Afterward, head out to the Middle of the World and learn about the fascinating importance of the equator!

Day 3: Arrive in Galapagos / Santa Cruz Island / Transfer to Boat

After an early breakfast at Casa Gangotena, you’ll head out to the airport in time to catch your flight to the Galapagos Islands!

Baltra Island

You’ll arrive on the island of Baltra, take a short ferry ride across the Itabaca Channel, and be driven over to the highlands of Santa Cruz Island.

You’ll enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. Afterward, you’ll visit a sanctuary where you can observe giant tortoises in their element y even explore some interesting lava tunnels.

Transfer to Yacht Isabela II

After wrapping up the visit, you’ll take a ride over to Puerto Ayora. Members of the Yacht Isabela II crew will meet you here and take you over to the ship via panga (dinghy). You’ll be welcomed by the Captain and will have a chance to settle in before sitting down to dinner.

Day 4: Santiago Island / Chinese Hat Islet

At Puerto Egas, you’ll experience your first wet landing of the trip, arriving at a black, sandy beach by panga (dinghy). You’ll see some amazing species up close, among them the recently-reintroduced land iguanas, alongside a variety of land and sea birds, fur seals, and rocky landscapes forged by lava flows.

Chinese Hat Islet

Chinese Hat Islet is the site you’ll visit in the afternoon. The beach here is crescent-shaped with white sand. You’ll get a chance to do some swimming and snorkeling with Galapagos penguins and even some white-tipped reef sharks! A ¼ mi (400 m) trail offers an additional opportunity to check out the local wildlife.

Day 5: Genovesa Island

Genovesa is sometimes referred to as “Bird Island”. This morning’s visit begins with a panga ride hugging the island’s fascinating cliffs. Once you arrive ashore, a pleasant walk takes you up a steep staircase, which plateaus at the site of large colonies of Nazca and red-footed boobies, storm petrels, and great frigatebirds. If you’re lucky, you may even spot a short-eared owl. Weather permitting, snorkeling and kayaking activities will be made available at this spot.

Another exciting spot on Genovesa Island is Darwin Bay. This afternoon offers the chance to view tons of frigatebirds, red-footed boobies, gulls, herons, finches, mockingbirds, and Nazca boobies. The terrain here is quite stunning, particularly as the sun begins to set.

Day 6: Santa Fe & Santa Cruz Islands

The Santa Fe land iguana is endemic to its namesake island.

Santa Fe Island

A visit to Santa Fe Island means you’ll get the opportunity to observe the Santa Fe land iguana! One of about 15 iconic species in the Galapagos. This golden-colored iguana can only be found on its namesake island. The morning’s walk takes you along an arid trail with numerous prickly pear cactuses, which provide sustenance for the Santa Fe land iguana. Following the hike, guests can take part in aquatic activities along a natural wave barrier or ride along in the ship’s glass-bottom boat.

Punta Carrion (Santa Cruz Island)

This afternoon, it’s back to Santa Cruz for a quick visit to Punta Carrion. A rocky coastline yields curious formations, plant and wildlife. Here, you’ll spot playful sea lions, dozens of reef fish, including surgeonfish, puffers, angelfish, groupers, hogfish, parrotfish, hawkfish, and more! These can all be observed from the water or aboard the glass-bottom boat!

Lima’s Main Square features colonial architecture, numerous plazas, and some of the best cuisine in the world.

Day 7: Airport on Baltra Island / Lima

Baltra Island is your final stop along this cruise. Here, you’ll transfer to airport and fly onward to the mainland.


A short layover at Guayaquil’s José Joaquin de Olmedo Airport, and you’ll catch your next flight to Lima, Peru.


One of our team members will greet you at Lima International Airport. From there, you’ll head over to the Double Tree El Pardo Hotel. Our team member will help you check in. They’ll also hand you the information and vouchers you’ll need during your time in Peru.

Day 8: Lima City Tour

A half-day tour of Lima’s beautiful historic center awaits! Along the way, you’ll visit a number of sites including the Plaza Mayor, Government Palace, Central Bank Reserve (museum), Plaza San Martin, and Santo Domingo Convent.

You’ll also get a chance to view some remarkable pre-Colombian art at the Larco Herrera Museum and Hacienda. The hacienda was built on a sacred pre-Inca site, situated in the Pueblo Libre District. The museum’s café is where you’ll enjoy a lovely lunch before heading back to your hotel.

Overnight in Lima.

Day 9: Sacred Valley Tour

Today, you fly from Lima to Cuzco and make your way to the Sacred Valley. A team member will pick you up at the hotel lobby and drive you to the airport. The flight to Cuzco is short. Upon arriving at the airport, you’ll meet another of our team members, and then drive a little ways to Sacred Valley!

A visit to the Awanachanca (“the palace of weaving”) textile center gives you the chance to learn about different centuries-old dyeing techniques. Another stop you’ll make on this day is at the Sacred Valley’s Pisac Market, a place that is home to dozens of artisans and tons of their handicrafts.

The last stop before heading over to your hotel is Pablo Seminario’s Ceramic Workshop where a renowned local artist (Pablo Seminario), has his year-round studio.

Finally, you’ll be dropped off at the Tambo del Inka Hotel.

Box lunch is included on this day. Overnight in the Sacred Valley.

Day 10: Sacred Valley Tour

Today, you’ll keep exploring Sacred Valley, against the backdrop of the stunning Andes Mountains that surround you. These mountains are filled with life and there is also an abundance of art! Our first stop is Chinchero Town, which boasts a plaza that serves as a hub for many artisans who survive by selling their creations to countless visitors.

The Maras Salt Pans are a series of terraces carved into the mountainside where salt is produced and harvested. This spot also features breathtaking views of the surrounding valley.

Ollantaytambo Fortress Sacred Valley Peru

Ollantaytambo Fortress is another fantastic site featuring Inca era ruins.

A buffet-style lunch follows at Tunupa Restaurant. Afterward, it’s off to Ollantaytambo Fortress, which was constructed created centuries ago as a bastion for thwarting invasions from neighboring tribes. Here, you’ll learn some more about the Inca Empire, its rich cultural and societal history.

In the afternoon, say goodbye to Ollantaytambo and hello to the train that will take you closer to majestic Machu Picchu. The town where you’ll be staying is called Aguas Calientes, though many folks simply refer to it as Machu Picchu Town. You’ll be welcomed to Sumaq Machu Picchu Hotel, where you can rest up and prepare for the following day, which promises to be a big one!

Day 11: Machu Picchu

Following an early morning breakfast, a short 20-minute bus ride takes you to Machu Picchu.

Once you arrive, you’ll take a guided tour of the Citadel’s Main Plaza, Sacred Sun Dial, Temple of the Three Windows, Circular Tower, and Royal Quarters.

A buffet-style lunch, served at Belmond Sanctuary Lodge’s Tinkuy Restaurant, is included as part of this package.

In the afternoon, you’ll catch a shuttle back to Aguas Calientes. From there, your next train ride takes you to Cuzco. One of our team members will be there to welcome you and take you over to Cuzco Palacio del Inka hotel.

Day 12: Cuzco City Tour / Transfer to Airport / Farewell!

Peru still has more to show you, and before you head home or onward to your next destination, a guided tour of Cuzco, the Imperial City provides the opportunity to see some of the best examples of Inca culture, history, and architecture. After all, this place is known as the archaeological capital of South America!

One of our associates will meet you in the hotel lobby in the afternoon, assist you with check-out, and drive you over to Cuzco Airport.
