What is the ideal ship size for your Galapagos cruise?

No massive ships sail in the Galapagos Marine Reserve. Contrary to mass-tourism-centered Caribbean cruises, Galapagos cruises focus on exploration. Therefore, ships are much smaller expedition vessels, carrying no more than a hundred passengers.

Galapagos National Park regulations do not count ship size to manage island visits, but group size. With the average number of passengers per vessel rounding 70, Galapagos cruises will have no more than 20 explorers per group. With Metropolitan Touring, groups will feature an average of 12 passengers per Naturalist Guide.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A CRUISE IN THE CARIBBEAN AND A CRUISE IN THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS?

At first glance, you might think that these two places share a lot in common, but don’t be fooled! They couldn’t be further apart in terms of the experiences and memories they offer!

The Caribbean Islands are popular but a victim of mass-tourism, while the Galapagos Islands are a highly exclusive and excursion-focused destination (with smaller groups).

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST GALAPAGOS ITINERARY

There’s an incredible number of things to see and do in the Galapagos. Lucky for you that we’ve conveniently organized the archipelago into itineraries that focus on the greatest wildlife exposure and gorgeous landscapes! Below, we’ll help you find out how to settle on the best Galapagos itinerary for you!

UNDERSTAND THE SIZE OF THE GALAPAGOS

  • There are 21 major islands, 14 of which can be visited, spread out across an area of 17,000 sq. mi. (45,000 sq. km.) in the Pacific Ocean. Only 18% of this area is actual land. The marine reserve covers 51,352 sq. mi. (133,000 sq. km.).
  • It’s the distances that exist between each island that make this archipelago a destination that cannot be explored in its entirety within a day or on any single cruise itinerary.
  • That’s why we’ve divided the archipelago into three separate regions (and itineraries), none of which goes under the recommended minimum of five days. This allows our explorers to never feel rushed and to have ample time to properly experience their chosen region of the archipelago.

DECIDE ON SPECIES OF WILDLIFE

  • As one of the greatest biodiversity hotspots on our planet, many come to the Galapagos Islands to witness wildlife that can’t be seen elsewhere! This is why it’s so important that you consider what species of iconic wildlife you’d like to see in the Galapagos.
  • Within this list of 15 iconic Galapagos creatures, there are three major species that are exclusive to each of our different itineraries. These are: the Flightless Cormorant, the Red-footed Booby, and the Galapagos Albatross. If you are itching to see any one of these species in particular, be sure to ask our Destination Experts for the itinerary that best suits seeing it! Read our blog about how to travel to Galapagos.

CONSIDER WHAT ISLANDS TO VISIT

  • Experiencing the otherworldly terrain and geological distinctiveness of the islands in the Galapagos is another big appeal. Epic cliffsides along the coast, volcanic terrain, numerous beaches with different-colored sand, lush highlands, and more await! Get expert travel insights on the best time to go to Galapagos.
  • A total of 14 islands can be visited when you put all of our itineraries together, with an average of five different islands available per itinerary. The Top 3 Galapagos Islands are:
    1. Española Island
    2. Fernandina Island
    3. Genovesa Island

HOW DIFFICULT ARE THE ACTIVITIES IN THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS?

When it comes to visiting the Galapagos Islands aboard a multi-guided vessel (we’ll fill you in on what this means in the following section), it’s good to know that you’ll have an ample selection of activities to choose from that fall in line with your pace, style, and preference.

Here’s a brief look at how easy/difficult these Galapagos activities are!

SEA-BASED ACTIVITIES

On a scale from 1 to 10 (1= relaxing in a hot tub, 10= being in a swimming race): The difficulty level of aquatic activities in the Galapagos ranges from 3 to 6.

Keep in mind that the availability of aquatic activities such as kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkeling, glass-bottom boat, etc. are contingent upon weather conditions.

LAND ACTIVITIES

On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 = a stroll through a city park, 10=a hike up mountainous terrain): The Galapagos sits comfortably between a 3 and a 5. Trails in the Galapagos average no more than a mile (1.6 km) in length and span distinct types of terrain — such as gravel, sand, and lava rock — and are often relatively flat or have a slight upward incline.

WHY SHOULD YOUR GALAPAGOS CRUISE HAVE MORE THAN ONE GUIDE?

The Galapagos National Park requires that all visitors be accompanied by a certified naturalist guide when exploring or partaking in activities within the park itself. However, ¡ts important to note that having the right number of guides (relative to the number of guests) aboard your expedition vessel is critical in either making or breaking your Galapagos trip.

Find out why below!

INTIMATE GROUPS
  • Excursion groups in the Galapagos are allowed to have a maximum ratio of one guide for every 16 guests onboard.
  • Groups aboard multi-guided vessels typically end up being smaller (avg. around 12 guests per guide).
  • A smaller boat in the Galapagos does not guarantee going ashore in a smaller group, as these only have one guide that will be accompanying and supervising all guests.
LANGUAGE
  • Don’t make the mistake of assuming everyone onboard will speak your language, as travelers from all over the world come to the Galapagos!
  • Single-guided boats will often see their guides having to repeat the same information in different languages for the same group that’s made up of different nationalities.
  • Multi-guided vessels will often organize their excursion groups by language preference, sparing you from having to wait through translations on your tour.
CHOOSE YOUR ACTIVITY
  • Don’t forget: Travelers must always be accompanied by a Naturalist Guide while exploring the National Park, regardless of activity.
  • Always make sure your Galapagos Tour offers more than one activity at each visitor site. This can only happen on vessels that have more than 1 guide.
  • Having multiple simultaneous activities at each visitor sites allows big groups, such as families, the freedom to choose from both exciting and relaxing options.

What's the difference between visiting the Galapagos Islands and the Galapagos National Park

97% of the archipelago comprises the Galapagos National Park. The other 3% is designated for the human communities that live there.

DID YOU KNOW?

Visitors can only enter the Galapagos National Park aboard any one of 69 vessels and/or 11 day cruisers that have been certified and approved by the National Park Authority.

Per day, only 1,860 passengers on boats and 180 passengers on day cruisers are allowed within the 4,970 square miles (8,000 square kilometers) of National Park.

Naturalist Guides are essential when exploring the National Park. However, the rest of the Galapagos and its towns can be explored entirely on your own.

Spectacular visitor sites—such as Tortuga Bay and Las Grietas—are notable mentions when it comes to places worth visiting outside of the National Park.

Exploring the Galapagos National Park affords travelers a greater variety and number of Galapagos iconic species and unique landscapes.

Our custom trip to Quito, the Galapagos and Mashpi Lodge was incredible, one of the best we've ever taken as a family. It took a lot of planning and we tend to be particular but Diego made adjustment after adjustment until we were happy.
