Los Gemelos Crater & Giant Tortoise Reserve (Santa Cruz)

First stop is Los Gemelos Crater, where you will discover the Islands’ volcanic origins through the geological depressions of these collapsed underground magma chambers. Commonly referred to as craters by the local population, The Twins are two sinkholes left by lava flows of the once-active volcanoes in Galapagos, facing each other on either side of the highway.

Now for some Galapagos BIG15 species sighting, we’ll go see the iconic Galapagos Giant Tortoises in their natural habitat at Rancho Las Primicias. Once a family-owned farm, this place was converted to a Reserve to allow visitors to marvel at these mysterious animals in a protected setting. Watch them roam around the property as they graze on the surrounding vegetation, or wallow amidst pond-weeds that color the waters red.

Enjoy a nice lunch before heading to the Finch Bay on a shared transfer to get settled. At Finch Bay’s Restaurant, you’ll have a delicious dinner from our set menu!

Day 5: Land day tour in Santa Cruz Island

After breakfast, today’s expedition is by land, and we’ll remain in Santa Cruz, Galapagos’ second-largest and most populated island, where the biggest town in the archipelago is −Puerto Ayora. There are three options for your land tour:

Tortuga Bay is everyone’s favorite beach in all of Galapagos, with its stunning white sand and surrounding giant cacti forest. Walk down its entire stretch and find marine iguanas secluded between mangroves in a smaller second beach. Tortuga is in walking distance from our hotel and perfect for kayaking, snorkeling and even surfing!

The Charles Darwin Research Station is an interpretation center that features a tortoise breeding program. Here, scientific research is carried out inside a prickly-pear cactus forest. The Station also hosts conservation efforts. You can see giant tortoises in captivity here as well as many land birds.

Divine Bay is a beautiful, quiet cove located just off of Puerto Ayora near Academy Bay. It’s protected by natural reefs, mangrove trees and cliffs, creating a wonderful natural shelter for wildlife, easily observed by kayaking. There are herons, noddy terns, blue-footed boobies, sea turtles, and reef sharks.

Lunch and dinner are included, from Finch Bay’s Restaurant menu.

North Seymour Island & Las Bachas Beach

North Seymour was originally a seabed until a seismic event lifted it from the ocean floor. The resulting natural structure of its terrain created a surface varied enough in spaces for the endemic flora and fauna to settle. With small cliffs, various ledges and rocks, and a silver-grey cluster of Palo Santo trees, you can spot land and marine iguanas, Nazca- and blue-footed boobies, frigates, sea lions and fur seals.

Available on Mondays (Las Bachas/North Seymour) and Sundays (North Seymour/Las Bachas)

Bartolome Island

This island is home to the only species of penguin found north of the equator, aptly named the Galapagos Penguin. Bartolome is also ideal to snorkel with sea lions, since they’re quite unafraid of humans and very playful. You can see both species along the ledges and platforms of the best-known landmark in the islands, a spearheaded obelisk that towers over the animals and passing tourists from the ocean’s edge: Pinnacle Rock.

Available on Tuesdays and Saturdays

South Plaza Island

Between its shore, its dramatic cliffs, and its color-changing vegetation, South Plaza is one of Galapagos’ most impressive visitor sites. Prepare for fascinating wildlife observation: sea lions, land and marine iguanas, swallow-tailed gulls, stunning red crabs and various Darwin finches.

Available on Wednesdays and Fridays

Santa Fe Island

This island too was uplifted seismically, so the geological layout is a beautiful layered sight. From lava formations that were once underwater, to a peninsula of tiny islets and a turquoise lagoon sheltered in a cove, Santa Fe holds some of the most beautiful displays of nature southeast of Santa Cruz. This island is also home to the one-of-a-kind Santa Fe land iguana, which lays under enormous cacti to catch falling fruits and pads.

Available on Thursdays
