Cuenca, Southern Belle

Cuenca Cathedral

In the southern Ecuadorian Andes lies the nation’s best-kept secret: the charming colonial city of Cuenca. Its marvellous historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that still retains all of its traditional charm. Cuenca is a city to be visited leisurely with strolls along flower-lined, cobblestone streets. Take photos along the riverbanks, stop at one of the many colonial churches, or peek into one of the many antique shops and art galleries. The city includes some fine museums and religious art collections, excellent restaurants and wonderful boutique hotels.

Heading out beyond the city, the towns of Gualaceo and Chordeleg are also fun for shoppers, while Cajas National Park is great for those who love to hike and camp.
