This journey combines a dramatic downhill run with a taste of Ecuadorian rural life. We’ll bike from below the snowline, through stark highlands, and on to lush and fertile Andean valleys dotted with charming Indian villages. Throughout the day, the Ilinizas, Corazon, and Sincholagua volcanos will accompany us, not to mention the majestic Cotopaxi. We spend the night at a comfortable hacienda-hotel.

Itinerary

BIKING AT THE COTOPAXI NATIONAL PARK
Start your biking adventure at 3,800 metres at the foot of the world’s highest active volcano, the mighty Cotopaxi. The thrilling volcanic roads and dry lava paths take us through stunning high-altitude landscapes, before reaching the Limpiopungo Glacier Lake at the foothills of Rumiñahui Volcano, where a picnic lunch will be served. Here you can observe the abundant bird life of the area, including the Andean Gull, Andean Teal, Ducks, Coots, Falcons and possibly the endangered Andean Condor. From the lake, we continue our journey downhill, following off-roads into the nearby valleys to observe local farming and traditional ways. This evening will be spent at a traditional colonial hacienda which is now open to guests. (L, D)
ILLINIZAS TWIN PEAKS
After breakfast, we will drive north to Pastocalle where we start cycling at the base of the Ilinizas twin peaks. We will descend towards the Chaupi Valley on highland dirt roads, riding through open highland valleys and enjoying the Andean scenery. From the Chaupi Valley we transfer trails to the old train line, where we end our day at the train station in Aloag. At the conclusion of the activities, there will be a transfer back to Quito.
