The Central Market (Mercado Central) in Santiago, Chile has been named as the fifth of National Geographic's top ten food markets in the world. This gastronomic centre characterized by its wrought-iron, Art Nouveau-style structure, has 241 stalls offering a delightful array of fish, seafood, cheese shops, fruits, vegetables and bread.
The market opened its doors in 1872 during Federico Errázuriz Zañartu's presidency. Its structure was first built in England and then assembled in Santiago. It was declared a National Monument in 1984.
