Kuelap, known as the "Peruvian Babel Tower", is an ancient stone fortress strategically built by the Chachapoyas or Cloud People; which has recently capture the attention of archaeologists, international magazines and film companies due to its history and the recent discoveries on its nearby areas.
Kuelap presents itself to visitors, like an unconquerable place, surrounded by cliffs on three of its four sides. The impressive stone fortress is located at 3000 masl / 9843 fasl, in the upper part of the Utcubamba River Valley, on a 6-hectare surface.
It was built by the mysterious warrior culture of the Chachapoyas, who defeated its territory from the Incas until falling in latest XIV century, just decades before the arrival of the Spanish troops. It was discovered on 1843; almost 70 years before Machu Picchu, however it was not until now that it is gaining recognition worldwide.
