FUNDACION GALAPAGOS-ECUADOR – Important Project Update!
Used oil filters leaving Galapagos
Our projects at Fundación Galápagos-Ecuador have reached new heights, and it is great to see the positive reaction of the local community and visitors to the islands. Our Coastal Cleanup operations advance full steam ahead, with the strong support from Fundación Coca Cola-Ecuador. All these efforts enable us to organize even more coastal cleaning trips. As of June 2010, and together with the local artisanal fishermen, we have collected over 79,000 Kg (176,000 pounds) of floating debris.
Our recycling efforts, alongside the support from the Municipal Government of Santa Cruz Island, have now recycled 2,055,555 Kg (4,522,221 pounds) of solid waste. Additionally, 1,207,000 Kg (2,655,000 pounds) of organic waste have been processed for composting and production of natural fertilizer. In the months ahead, the first results of the recycling program on Isabela Island will be in.
Every year, more students come aboard our vessels to explore the Galapagos National Park and the Galapagos Marine Reserve. In 2010 we will take at least 60 local students, and all will be oriented and led by our Expedition Team. We have prepared a special selection of talks for these visits. Since 1998, we have invited 192 local students.
Burned oil tanks arriving in Guayaquil
Our new project related to transportation of burned oils and hazardous materials is up and running, and thanks to the vision of Bolívar Zapata and the RELUSAN Initiative, over 17,000 gallons of burned oil and 6,000 Kg (13,200 pounds) of discarded oil filters have been shipped out from the islands. Upon arrival at Guayaquil, these materials are technically managed for environmental degradation. Fundación Galápagos-Ecuador and Metropolitan Touring partially finance the project and fully support the logistical and transportation costs aboard the M/V San Cristóbal cargo vessel.
We are delighted to report our sustainability projects' significant progress in the fragile Galápagos Islands, andlook forward to your continuous and continued support. If you want to contribute to our projects, please contact us at: fge@metropolitan-touring.com
