Buenos Aires´s iconic Colón Theatre reopens following $100m renovation

The Colón Theatre is the main opera house in Buenos Aires. Its acoustics rank it among the top five theatres in the world according to many experts. Over the years, the Colón Theatre has hosted great composers, along with internationally-renowned conductors and singers, becoming synonymous with quality, glamour and above all, wonderful music.

The theatre opened on May 25th, 1908 with the presentation of "Aida", Verdi's opera, following some two decades of construction work. The cornerstone of the present Colón Theatre was laid in 1889 under the direction of architect Francesco Tamburini and his pupil, Vittorio Meano, who designed a theatre following the Italian style. The building was finally completed in 1908 under the direction of the Belgian architect Julio Dormal who made some changes in the structure and left his mark in the French style of the decoration. As a result, the theater is a great example of the 19th century eclectica.

The bill for renovating this Belle Époque gem to its former glory ran to some $100 million, with no expense spared to bring the seven-tier, 2,500-seat theatre back to life.

More than a thousand craftsmen and artisans worked on the restoration, removing layer after layer of paint, freeing frescoes from decades-old patina, applying new gold leaf, polishing Italian marble and refinishing parquet floors.  The top priority was to do nothing that could alter the acoustics.

The 2010 Season will feature such great figures as Argentine-born Daniel Barenboim, Director of the State Opera Berlin; Indian conductor Zubin Mehta with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra; Hungarian pianist Andras Schiff and Chinese-American cellist Yo-Yo Ma.  And the operas: Don Giovanni, Manon, Kátia Kabanová, A Florentine Tragedy, Violanta and Falstaff.
