This month Machu Picchu dresses up to celebrate the third anniversary of its gaining a place among the New Seven Wonders of the World, the worldwide contest organized by the New 7 Wonders Foundation.
Among the activities in commemoration of this important award are an earth-homage ceremony held by the authorities of the region, a parade of local institutions and an artistic presentation by several groups of musicians and dancers, appreciated by local residents and foreign and Peruvian tourists.
Rediscovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911, after four centuries of silence hidden among the mountains, Machu Picchu is thought to have been the political, military and religious center of the Inca Empire between the thirteenth and sixteenth century.
