The largest blue whale population in the Southern Hemisphere was discovered off Chiloé Island in 2001 and now, year after year, more is understood about these incredible animals and their routes. To spot the largest animal on the planet and enjoy their jumps and tails raised over the water is a unique and unforgettable adventure. Metropolitan Touring Chile is making it possible with a special marine life sightings program.
The journey will take you through the outer islands of the Chiloé Archipelago, islands seemingly from another era and embedded in a maritime way of life. Fishing boats ply the rich waters and at low tide, seaweed is collected in carts pulled by oxen. Between these islands and the nearby wall of the Andes Mountains, rising from the depths and forming the Patagonian fjords, is the area where the blue whales have been spotted in the last four years feeding in the area's rich marine environment.
This richness also supports many penguins, sea lions and two species of native dolphins. We will also visit small islands that allow us to take walks to enjoy the lovely views over to the glaciers of the mainland and to meet locals and gain an appreciation of their daily life.
