After two editions in South America, the organizers of Dakar, the largest rally - raid race in the world, enthusiastically announced that for the third consecutive year it will be back in 2011 through Chilean and Argentine territory. The good relationship between both countries and the popular fervor it raised last January has led the team to propose a third Dakar challenge between January 1 and 16.
For many, the importance of this event comes at a very opportune moment, after Chile has suffered from the earthquake last February. The Dakar will help Chile look forward and show that we know how to overcome adversity.
As the event director, Etienne Lavigne said to the press, the next version of the Dakar 2011 will visit areas of northern Chile, including Arica and San Pedro de Atacama, which are new cities that incorporate to the route, near the borders with Bolivia and Peru.
The rally, which will start in Buenos Aires, plans to cross the Andes on January 5, to reach the Chilean desert. The Dakar will live some of the most interesting days in the Atacama Desert, "a desert that has not yet unveiled all its wealth," said Lavigne.
After 29 editions in Africa (1979-2007), South America is the new "home" of Dakar In the opinion of many, it has come to stay.
