Santa Cruz Island’s most mentioned environmental project continues generating new results, and this receives every day wider acceptance and commitment by the local population. The cooperation between the local Municipality, Galápagos National Park, WWF - World Wide Fund For Nature, and ourselves has been the source for success. These results have made Santa Cruz Island a World example when it comes to processing solid waste on islands. It is important to remember that the volcanic substrate of this archipelago has a very thin layer of top soil. Thus, physically, places like the local landfill last very little time since they get full quite rapidly. The formula and environmental solution lies at simply generating less solid waste for the landfill. The less garbage sent there, the longer the lifespan for such areas. These realities and actions can actively minimize and reduce the environmental footprints of human beings in the pristine and fragile ecosystem of the Galápagos Islands.

A new category has been designated and is called “Other Materials”. It includes Tetrapack packaging, aluminum cans, cement bags, etc. The results and the types of processed solid waste are:
The assigned funds for all these environmental initiatives show us that the efficiency of the project is also linked to the kind donations received from our guests and clients. Everyone who becomes motivated and touched by this project feels like joining in, and that alone allows them to also reduce their own environmental footprint. All financial help is welcomed and highly appreciated since it helps us to reach goals faster as part of a realistic approach to our Environmental Policy.
