Our Environmental Policy asks us to share our actions and projects with institutions and third parties. Being able to share with others our experiences in sustainable tourism has been a great opportunity to promote and explain the tasks and accomplishments of all we’ve achieved over time.
During the first week of June 2009, the city of Quito hosted the IV International Forum City & Environment 2009, and we were invited to share with the audience our experience. Metropolitan Touring joined Ronald Sanabria, Sustainability Director at Rainforest Alliance, to participate as panelists in the module “Sustainable Conservation of Natural Heritage”. The panel had its own specific theme “New Challenges and Perspectives of Sustainable Tourism”.
This International Forum was organized because of the importance of the environmental agenda worldwide. Quito is proud to host its fourth event. Global warming, the inadequate disposal of solid waste, lack of care and promotion of natural heritages, lack of eco-efficient buildings, amongst others, were the themes discussed at a regional and international level.
Since these are realities, the Municipality of the Metropolitan District of Quito, through its Environmental Division, opens up every year a space for discussion, interexchange of experiences, and generation of new proposals that will benefit various social sectors, allowing them to understand more about the environment, and the possible routes for decreasing the negative impact of mankind in its daily relationship with what surrounds it.
The main goal at the Forum is to promote current trends and experiences of sustainable environmental initiatives from several sectors, as a way to trigger new mechanisms and proposals in a culture of environmental respect. Experts from Brazil, Costa Rica, Colombia, United States, Perú, Venezuela and naturally Ecuador, had different opportunities to socialize concepts, criterion, and projects related to improving the environmental quality, as well as the quality of life of those who live in such fragile places. Tourism is certainly and important actor in this field. Metropolitan Touring presented its case, including the implementation of our Environmental Policy, International Certifications, and the successful stories surrounding Fundación Galápagos-Ecuador.
June 5: World Environment Day
Every year, on June 5th, the World celebrates Environment Day. Metropolitan Touring proudly commemorated this celebration too. This unique date should motivate us all to deeply question the role humans play in the environment. What are our true environmental improvements, and what our environmental catastrophes? How can we individually contribute towards a healthier and more sustainable environment? Whose responsibility is it at the end of the day? Is it the local Municipalities' or the neighborhoods'? The authorities' or the city councils'? Actually, the only true answer lies right at the individual actions taken by every single human being. These actions become a tool that, little by little, generates sustainability for the next generations, so they can also live in a planet where life charts the way of existence.
