As we approach the end of a new Mother’s Day in Ecuador (not all places share the date), I think of the Galapagos Islands as a unique place to celebrate our shared caregiver, our beautiful planet, our Mother Earth.
It is a mystery how life in the Galapagos Islands even exists. Animals survive in the harshest of situations, hundreds of kilometers from the luxuries of continental life, on largely unfertile volcanic rocks, and learn how to live in a most fragile, perfect harmony with what their destiny has dealt them. So what better place to think of the generosity of life… where, even in the most deserted and inhospitable places, our Mother Nature provides what’s needed to live and thrive.
On the other hand, there are few places like the Galapagos Islands to show our nature’s mothers at work. Sea lions, boobies, gulls, penguins, sea turtles… laying eggs, giving birth, feeding, caring for their young and tending to their nests, are all things you may witness and experience during many a Galapagos cruise, and the opportunity to do so will be inspiring every time.
So, for many reasons, thinking both of Mother’s Day and the Galapagos Islands makes sense to me.
